Śrīguru-caritāmṛta of Shri A. G. Deshpande (Sonatkar) is an adaptation of the Śrīguru-caritra of Sarasvatī Gaṅgādhara, recast in the form of a classical Sanskrit mahākāvya. It constitutes the third work in the poet’s triad of compositions based on the Śrīguru-caritra tradition. The other two works are Śrīguru-gaurava-gāthā, a short Sanskrit poem comprising 308 gāthā verses, and Amṛta-taraṅgiṇī (also known as Subodha Śrīguru-caritra), a Marathi poetic work.The present mahākāvya, in keeping with the spirit of much modern Sanskrit literature, eschews excessive ornamentation and displays of poetic rivalry, while consistently retaining a classical flavour. Despite its poetic richness, its employment of varied metrical patterns, and its skilful use of figurative language, the purāṇic fervour of the original work remains undiluted.
The original Sanskrit mahākāvya composed by Shri A. G. Deshpande is edited by Dr. G.B. Jani, Director, P.G. & Research Department, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

Shri Anant G. Deshpande, Sonatkar was born to Shri Gopalrao Shamrao Deshpande, and Smt. Bhagirathibai G. Deshpande, on 15th August, 1930, at Lonar, Dist. Buldhana, Maharashtra. His family of Deshastha Rigvedi Brahmin of Bharadvaja Gotra originally hails from village Sonati, Tal. Mehkar, Dist. Buldhana, Maharashtra.
